Inferences From Pictures

This is an introductory lesson to begin giving students experiences in inferring from pictures.

Objectives:

Students will be able to infer specifics from a picture.

Students will be able to infer an appropriate name for a painting.

Activities (must have web access):

        1.  Introduce concepts of inference (and the sorts of evidence that should be used to infer).
        2.  Have each student view a painting.  Paintings may be viewed by clicking on the links listed at the end of this lesson, or teacher may use other paintings.  Have students complete the worksheet.
        3.  Lead a class discussion of the inferences and ask students to support these inferences with evidence.
        4.  Provide corrective feedback for inappropriate names and inferences, focusing on the evidence used for the inference.
